Discover the Saptarishis: The Founding Sages of Ayurveda and Vedic Wisdom

By Françoise Barrios

Today, let us dive together into a fascinating aspect of the Vedic tradition: the Saptarishis, or "Seven Sages", who are considered the pillars of ancient wisdom, including the foundations of Ayurveda. These legendary figures are not just mythical characters, but living symbols of spiritual and practical knowledge, whose influence still resonates in our well-being practices today.

The Saptarishis: celestial guides for our well-being

Who are the Saptarishis?

The Saptarishis are seven great sages of the Hindu tradition, whose best-known names in our present era are: Atri, Bharadvāja, Gautama, Jamadagni, Kaśyapa, Vasiṣṭha and Viśvāmitra. These sages, older than written history, are said to have received the Vedas – the sacred texts of India – directly through deep meditation. The Vedas are called "śruti", meaning "that which is heard", because the sages captured this divine wisdom before passing it on to humanity.

Their link with Ayurveda?

Ayurveda, the "science of life", has its roots in the teachings of these sages. Among them, Bharadvāja stands out in particular. This sage is recognised as one of the first to have codified the principles of Ayurveda and to have passed on knowledge of medicinal plants, massage and purification practices. His legacy lives on in classical texts such as the Charaka Samhita, which remains an essential reference.

  • Bharadvāja codified the foundations of Ayurveda, notably in the Charaka Samhita, with knowledge of plants and massage.
  • Atri explored mantras and astronomy, influencing the natural rhythms of our practices.
  • Kaśyapa passed on a holistic vision of creation, a pillar of the Ayurvedic approach.
  • Vasiṣṭha and Viśvāmitra, known for their spiritual teachings, inspired practices of meditation and inner discipline that are essential for balancing the doshas.

A cosmic connection

The Saptarishis shine in the night sky as the constellation known as the "Saptarishi Mandala" (the Big Dipper). This celestial link reminds us to harmonise our body and mind with nature – a key principle of Ayurveda!

Their timeless wisdom

These sages embodied qualities that we can cultivate in our daily lives:

  • Atri : purity of mind for inner clarity.
  • Bharadvāja : discipline for a regular practice.
  • Gautama: truth to guide our health choices.
  • Jamadagni: self-mastery to balance our emotions
  • Kaśyapa: care for every form of life, reflecting the holistic approach of Ayurveda.
  • Vasiṣṭha: wisdom to make enlightened decisions.
  • Viśvāmitra: strong will to persevere in our well-being routines.

Why does this concern us?

The teachings of the Saptarishis are not frozen in the past. In Hindu cosmology, their identities change with each cosmic cycle (Manvantara), reflecting a cyclical view of time that contrasts with our linear Western perception. This idea invites us to see Ayurveda as a living path, adaptable to our modern needs while remaining rooted in ancient wisdom.
